So I just got a new toy. It’s the Traktor Kontrol X1, and it’s pretty dope. For those unfamiliar, it’s a DJ controller which allows me to control a number of effects and features in Traktor Scratch pro.

Years ago when I first began to learn how to DJ, I bought a cheap pair of Gemini belt driven turntables and a mixer from Radio Shack. It took me a LONG time to figure out how to beatmatch on these turntables and eventually upgraded to Technics turntables. Unfortunately, when I upgraded, I was too used to using Geminis, and had a hard time getting used to the sensitivities of the Technics pitch control. I also upgraded my Radio Shack mixer and bought a slightly more expensive Gemini mixer. Although it was a slightly better mixer, I started to have problems with the crossfader and channels, as I would get some static when using some of the faders. I eventually upgraded my mixer to an $800 Pioneer mixer that a number of clubs use.

Trying to beatmatch using your headphones covering both of your ears is a bad idea. Although this may be a popular technique with beginners, when you are in the club environment, mixers and sound conditions vary from club to club. Some mixers will not allow you to hear both sides through your headphones, and some sound conditions will be too loud for you to effectively hear through your headphones. If you can only beatmatch using both ears covered, you will be majorly screwed if you have a mixer which only allows cue functions without a monitor reference, or if sound conditions are too loud for you to hear.
